Terrorists without food

The Mozambican defence and security forces, on 18 and 19 February, detained four people suspected of working as informers for islamist terrorist groups in the town of Nangade, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, reports Wednesday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”.

Nangade is an important point on the route used by convoys carrying food and other supplies to the coastal town of Palma. The main road from the provincial capital, Pemba, to Palma runs through Mocimboa da Praia and Macomia districts, which are regarded as highly dangerous.

The only overland alternative is a road from the second largest town in the province, Montepuez, to Mueda, and then on to Palma via Nangade. From Nangade to Palma the convoys require military escorts. The four youths arrested in Nangade were believed to be collecting information on the convoys (such as their composition and times of departure) which they would pass on to the terrorists. However the four are well known locally as informal sellers of fish, footwear and cell phone airtime. Two of them are Tanzanians and two are Mozambicans. “Mediafax”’s sources say they were taken out of Nangade by helicopter. Elsewhere in Nangade district, terrorist atrocities have continued. On Monday morning, in the village of Ngalonga, about 70 kilometres from Nangade town, terrorists seized and beheaded two people. A third person was captured but, for reasons unknown, was released. A team of local militiamen was sent to pursue the terrorists, but it is not yet known whether they were able to track them down.
