Five Malawians have been detained in the city of Cuamba, Niassa province, after being found in possession of allegedly rented national ID documents. The individuals, who were travelling on a bus from Ngaúma, were identified during a police inspection, and three identity cards, two Personal Identification Documents (Cédula Pessoal) and an ID card slip seized.
Investigations have revealed that some Mozambicans have been renting their ID documents to foreigners for 17,000 Kwachas (13,000 meticais), National Directorate of Civil Identification (DNIC) spokesman Alberto Sumbane said. Sumbane said that the individuals in possession of Personal Identification Documents (Cédula Pessoal) in fact intended to have their own ID cards issued.
“These received these ID card slips, but were unable to obtain the actual documents [ID card], thanks to the attention of DNIC employees,” he commented, adding that most Malawians seek Mozambican documentation in order to enter South Africa more easily. Twelve individuals have been found in possession of Mozambican documents on various occasions, Sumbane said. The police are following up on the location of the holders of the seized documents with a view to holding them accountable.
