Restoration of Quelimane Cathedral

More than 13  million meticais has already been spent restoring the Old Cathedral of Quelimane in Zambezia. Budgeted at about US$1 million (around 61.6 million meticais at current exchange rates), rehabilitation started at the beginning of 2019 and is scheduled for completion in August next year, said Chief Engineer Edson Barros.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday during a visit by students from Quelimane General Secondary, Barros noted that Bons Sinais, the association responsible for the work, is financed by, among others,  the embassies of Norway and the United States, which have already disbursed more than 20 million meticais. The students’ visit, organised by the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, was in celebration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites , marked this Sunday ( April 18)

Juleca Andre, Head of Cultural Heritage Department in the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism in Zambézia, said that the visit aimed to bolster the students’ general cultural education. This year, the International Day of Monuments is celebrated under the motto, “Complex Pasts ; Diverse Futures”.
