The northern Mozambican province of Niassa is to export wood
produced by reforestation projects. Speaking on Sunday at a rally in Meluluca
during his working visit to the province, President Filipe Nyusi declared, “it
pleases us that the reforestation projects we are supporting will soon allow
Niassa to export timber”.According to the President, these exports will boost the local
economy and rail transport. He pointed out “our train that comes to Niassa with
various goods returns empty. In the future, it will transport wood from the
province”.
Reforestation projects with species such as pine and eucalyptus
occupy large areas the province. Among those involved in the schemes are the
Malonda Foundation and Green Resources.President Nyusi called for vigilance
against those who cheat the population by looting the riches of the province’s
forests and wildlife. He warned, “this will leave our province behind. It is
not possible to hide a tree trunk in one’s pocket. They pass through our towns
leaving small change behind. But afterwards they get rich in their own
countries”.
The President congratulated everyone for the province’s improvement
in agricultural output despite the various difficulties faced by the country.
In particular, he noted the increase in soya bean production which has led to
the beans being exported. He also praised increases in cotton, tobacco, and beans,
which now form part of household income.Whilst welcoming this achievement, the
President called for further increases in productivity and production.Today,
the President will travel to Tete province for a three-day working visit, which
is the last province covered in his annual tour of the nation.During his trip,
he will meet residents in the city of Tete and the districts of Chiuta,
Chifunde, Angonia, and Mutarara.
