The Judicial Court of Maputo City has confirmed the
pre-trial detention of former spokesperson for Mozambican migration services
Cira Fernandes and 15 other defendants involved in a false passport issuing
scheme, daily newspaper Noticias reported.
Noticias further reports that the criminal
investigation judge in the case granted bail to four defendants in the same
case, judging there was no flight risk in their cases.
Cira Fernandes, a former spokesperson for the National
Immigration Service (Senami) and 19 other defendants were arrested last month
on suspicion of involvement in issuing 42 false passports to Nigerian citizens.
The 42 Nigerians were detained in possession of the
passports in China, the Chinese authorities then alerting Mozambican justice
organs. Despite holding Mozambican passports, they had never even been to
Mozambique.
