Mozambican Defence and
Security Forces (SDS) stationed in the district of Mecula, Niassa province, on
Wednesday clashed with an unidentified group of individuals, Radio Mozambique
reports.
Alves Mate, police
spokesman at Niassa provincial police command, said that, when they became
aware of the presence of the police, the individuals fled.
“When they [the police]
approached the camp, they were greeted with gunfire, forcing them to respond.
There was an exchange of fire, and the bandits eventually evacuated the camp.
We launched an intense pursuit, but they managed to escape,” he said. Alves Mate reiterated that
the authorities were on the ground and still expecting to capture the
individuals involved.
