Mozambique flag-carrier Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) is to resume commercial flights to Europe from 25 August, with the Maputo-Lisbon connection, the company announced on Friday (14). “These flights allow people to travel between Mozambique and Portugal, as well as Europe and the rest of the world. It is important to pay attention to the border policies in force for entry into Mozambique and the European Union, due to the situation of the pandemic,” João Carlos Pó Jorge, director general of LAM, says in the statement.
According to LAM, the flights will use an Airbus A330-300 aircraft with 278 seats, and will, between August 25 and September 30, connect the two capitals twice a week, flying Maputo to Lisbon on Tuesdays and Lisbon-Maputo on Wednesdays. The statement indicates that the period of just over a month defined for the flights may be extended. The return of LAM to European space, initially scheduled for March 31, was postponed three times by coronavirus restrictions. In February of this year, the LAM director general said that the company’s return to European space would put LAM in a new ‘network’, foreseeing the route as sustainable.
“We looked at traffic intelligence and saw that this route has the most passengers, by far. Not only between Lisbon and Maputo, but also from Maputo to Lisbon and then on to Western Europe,” João Carlos Pó Jorge said.At the time, the company indicated that LAM’s return to European space would be made in cooperation with the Portuguese private airline Hi Fly, owner of the aircraft, with whom a six-month trial period was agreed. The last time LAM flew to Portugal was in 2011, the year in which the Mozambican carrier was banned from European airspace.
