The Ressano Garcia border post, the busiest between Mozambique and South Africa, reopened to the public on Thursday after months of closure due to restrictions imposed by Covid-19. The reopening of the border follows the easing of restrictions in South Africa, but the flow of people between the two countries is subject to compliance with the “Covid-19 protection protocol,” Mozambique’s National Migration Service (Senami) spokesman Celestino Matsinhe told Lusa.
“The
post is one of those that were not totally closed, from now on some categories
of travellers that were not accepted will be accepted. The national citizens
can from now on travel to South Africa for tourism, which was not the case
before”, explained Celestino Matsinhe.
Since
27 March, the border was only open for cargo transport and situations of state
interest.
“In
the early hours of the day we registered a strong influx of South African
citizens seeking to enter Mozambique,” said Celestino Matsinhe. Mozambique has
56 border posts, but only 32 are currently operational due to limitations
imposed by the new coronavirus. The country has had a total of 8,728 cases of
Covid-19 with 61 deaths and 5,232 recovered (60% of the total). South Africa,
the worst affected country on the continent, has had 674,339 cases and 16,734
deaths. The covid-19 pandemic has caused more than one million deaths and more
than 33.7 million cases of infection worldwide, according to the French agency
AFP.
