MOZAMBICANS DETAINED FOR TRAFFICKING CIGARETTES

Five Mozambicans were arrested on Monday in Pretoria West after being found in possession of thousands of illegal cigarettes hidden in their kombi’s panels and in black plastic bags underneath the vehicle. They were caught on their way from Mozambique to Rustenburg by South African police officers who stopped them for a routine check. According to South African media, a police spokesperson, Louise Brits, said that the driver was told to stop because his vehicle had no front number plate, but they then found all the hidden cigarettes. “The driver was asked for his driver’s license and he produced his Mozambican passport which did not have an official stamp, indicating that he was in the country (South Africa) illegally,” said Brits. The five were taken to the Marabastad Home Affairs offices. Two had proper documents while the rest did not have papers and the vehicle was taken to the police pound to be checked for roadworthiness. The men are currently detained at Pretoria Central police station and are expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
