RENAMO HITS TWO CONVOYS IN ONE DAY

Gunmen of Mozambique’s former rebel movement Renamo on Monday attacked convoys of vehicles on the country’s main north-south road twice.
As usual the attacks took place on the 100 kilometre long stretch of road between the Save river and the small town of Muxungue, in the central province of Sofala. Here the convoys travel under military escort, but the troops have been unable to stop Renamo opening fore from the dense bush at the side of the road. According to a press officer in the Sofala provincial police command, Sidide Paulo, cited on Tuesday by Radio Mozambique, two people were injured in the ambushes, one of them seriously. The seriously injured man is reported to be out of danger. The first attack occurred against the convoy heading south wards from Muxungue in the Zove area, a favourite spot for Renamo ambushes. The second took place at about 15.00 in the Mutigunti area. The ambushes occurred despite Monday’s announcement of “partial consensus” in the long running dialogue between the government and Renamo. The two sides even claimed there should be an “immediate” cessation of hostilities. But with two ambushes in one day, it is very clear that Renamo does not have the slightest intention of telling its gunmen to stop shooting.
