Answering a question from Radio Moçambique about the collecting of weapons in the hands of Renamo and other unauthorized individuals, the Minister of the Interior, Basilio Monteiro, said on Friday that weapons outside the control of the state in Mozambique pose no threat to the overall stability of the country. The Interior Minister previously said, at the closing session of the Permanent Joint Commission of Defence and Security between Malawi and Mozambique, that at any time the government may come to the conclusion that the compulsory collection of weapons is not justified if people are giving them up voluntarily. The meeting of the Permanent Joint Commission took place in Mangoche, Malawi, this week and, according to Monteiro, reached consensus on maintaining a peaceful environment and better managing the common border.
