The Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo is currently hosting an exhibition called ‘House of the Students of the Empire - Freedom Lighthouse’ (‘Casa dos Estudantes do Império - Farol de Liberdade’) organized by the Union of Portuguese Speaking Capital Cities (UCCLA) with the support of the Municipality of Lisbon.
In parallel with the exhibition, a round table debate attended by Mozambicans Hélder Martins, Fernando Vaz and Sérgio Vieira, who knew the House of the Students of the Empire well at university, will be held on Monday, November 9.Martins, Vaz and Vieira will reflect on and debate the various topics covered in the photographic and documentary exhibition, moderated by journalist Sérgio Banze. The House of the Students of the Empire was established in 1944 by the Estado Novo regime to facilitate interaction between university students of the former Portuguese colonies where there were no higher education institutions continuing their studies in Portugal.Compelling personalities in cultural and political life such as Agostinho Neto, Amilcar Cabral, Lúcio Lara, Fernando França Van Dunem, Joaquim Chissano, Pascoal Mocumbi, Pedro Pires, Onésimo Silveira, Francisco José Tenreiro, Alda do Espírito Santo, Vasco Cabral, Pepetela and Alda Lara were associated with the ‘lighthouse of freedom’.In the year that marks the 50th anniversary of the House's dissolution, the UCCLA’s travelling exhibition presents and honours the reality experienced by these young people, and the history they brought into being.
