The former head of state Joaquim
Chissano invite all Mozambicans who recognize the contribution of the former
Archbishop of Beira, Dom Jaime Gonçalves, in the search for peace in Mozambique
to follow their example.Chissano made this exhortation on Saturday in Beira,
the provincial capital of Sofala, during the funeral of Bishop Jaime Gonçalves,
who died last April 6 chain, due to illness."The message that all
Mozambicans who know that Don Jaime has dedicated his episcopate, above all,
peace in Mozambique and beyond, should continue to carry out this work to bring
peace and reconciliation to our country," Chissano said `reporters .The
former President of the Republic signed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (AGP)
with Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama in 1992 in the Italian capital, Rome, which
put an end to the war of 16 years between the government and one that is now
the largest political opposition force in Mozambique, a negotiation process
that saw the involvement of Don Jaime Gonçalves, representing the Catholic
Church.By way of tribute to the Emeritus Archbishop of Beira, Chissano
reiterated his thanks for his contribution in the pursuit of peace and
development.
"I remember his appeal last time I
was at the Catholic University when he (Don Jaime) asked if it is difficult for
brothers to sit and talk, to unite their efforts for the development of the
country, that nothing should be obstacle to Mozambicans to understand, "he
said.The meeting between Chissano and Bishop Jaime Gonçalves took place during
the celebrations of the 20 / the anniversary of the Catholic University of
Mozambique (UCM). On behalf of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, he was
co-fundadador UCM on 14 September 1995.In a message of eulogy, UCM recognized
the qualities of Don Jaime Gonçalves, stressing that his work and life 'bears
witness to their love that was pre-past in his every gesture along his busy
life.'In this context, the UCM honored the Archbishop "for his tenacity in
the decisive contribution in the process of consolidating peace in
Mozambique."The funeral of Bishop Jaime Gonçalves were witnessed by
several personalities of political, religious, academic and the population in
general.
