Gunmen from Mozambique’s opposition party
Renamo on Sunday morning attacked the administrative post of Maiaca, in Maua
district in the northern province of Niassa.The attackers ransacked the health
centre, the police station and the residence of the head of the administrative
post. During the raid, they stole property including medicines and police uniforms
and set fire to buildings.Witnesses told Radio Mozambique that they saw at
least a dozen gunmen take part in the raid.This was the second attack by Renamo
in Maua in a week. Last Sunday, in the administrative post of Muapula, gunmen
also destroyed property and stole medicines.A further attack took place in
central Mozambique over the weekend. On Saturday, Renamo attacked the district
headquarters of Mopeia in the Zambezia province. During the assault by a group
of twenty armed men on the local police station, a prisoner being held in the
cells was murdered. Medicines were stolen from the local health clinic, which
was vandalised by the assailants. Patients were forced from their beds and
their sheets stolen. In addition, two cars were set alight – including one
belonging to the education service.
