Nineteen people lost their lives and 12 others
sustained injuries of varying degrees in the Macia district, Gaza province, in
the early hours of yesterday, as a result of a major road traffic accident
involving four passenger vehicles and one freight vehicle. According to traffic
police at Gaza Provincial Command, the accident occurred around 4:00 a.m., in
the administrative post of Magul. Sixteen people lost their lives at the scene
and three others died at Macia District Hospital, to where they were evacuated.
The victims were travelling from South Africa in a
Toyota Quantum minibus to a destination yet to be determined, as all the
vehicle’s occupants lost their lives.
Police say that the minibus crashed into the freight
truck while overtaking. The collision then involved two other light vehicles,
causing just over a dozen serious injuries. Three vehicles including the
mini-bus were traveling northwards, while the heavy goods vehicle was moving
south. Police are continuing attempts, within the constraints of the condition
of the bodies, to identify the victims and inform their relatives. The accident
caused congestion on National Road Number 1 until around 12 noon yesterday,
when it was possible to remove the damaged vehicles and re-open the road.
