The Judicial
Court of Sofala, in central Mozambique, formalised the arrest of ten foreigners
found on 29 April in a boat drifting off the coast of that province. The ten
men, who said they were Pakistanis, are accused of conspiracy, whose arrest
came after disparities and contradictions in their statements, the newspaper
Noticias said on Thursday which cites a source linked to the process.
During their
first questioning, the men would have said they had been adrift for three
months due to a breakdown in their boat, but after being rescued, they said
they were looking for another boat that had disappeared in Pakistani waters in
late December.
When it was
found on 29 April, the 19-metre, wooden boat had a broken engine and no working
radio. At the time, the authorities said
the case was under investigation by a team including members of different
authorities – the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), the
Maritime Police and the Migration Service (SENAMI).
