The Mozambican community in Egypt is not in any danger, despite the current insurrection against the regime of President Hosni Mubarak, according to Mozambican Foreign Minister, Oldemiro Baloi.Speaking on Monday to Mozambican journalists covering the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, Baloi said that the 51 Mozambicans who are working and studying in Egypt are safe and in good health. When the uprising against Mubarak began about a week ago, the Mozambican authorities initially had no information about the situation of those Mozambican citizens living in Egypt. The regime tried to disrupt the demonstrations by cutting off internet and phone connections, and so communications between Maputo and Cairo suddenly became very difficult.“Fortunately today (Monday), we managed to contact our embassy in Egypt”, said Baloi, “and it was with great relief that we learnt that all the Mozambicans are safe and sound. We can thus reassure their families”.Of the 51 Mozambicans registered at the embassy, 49 live in Cairo and the remaining two in Alexandria.
