After hearing about news of a 100% price
increase on ticket prices with the national flag carrier, the Director-General
of LAM Mozambican Airlines, João Carlos Pó Jorge, yesterday clarified to ‘O
País’ the details of the price adjustments the company has in fact made.
“There was no 100% increase. What we did
was to introduce our new tariffs. Some fares went down, and some went
(slightly) up, with more services being provided,” João Carlos Pó Jorge
explained. He gave the example of business class, where “passengers want more
support service”.
‘O País’ in fact discovered that, on the
LAM website, a round trip from Maputo to Lichinga which used to cost between
7,000 and 19,000 meticais would now, for a passenger wanting to travel on January
4 and return on January 11, cost about 17,000 meticais.
“The key is to buy in advance, and look
at all the options. This means not just buying the ticket on the day of the
trip,” João Jorge Carlos said, explaining that there were always ways to pay less
for tickets. In an exclusive interview with ‘O País’ yesterday, LAM’s CEO also
spoke of the company’s commitment to continue to providing a more social
services, with favourable prices for the elderly and students, for example.
LAM expects to bolster its fleet with a
Q400 and a Boeing 737 in the coming months, allowing the transport of more
cargo and passengers, and is looking forward to starting flights to Lisbon
sometime around next March.
