President Filipe Nyusi wants the construction of the Mphanda Nkuwa
hydroelectric plant to start construction during his second term. The
project is expected to produce 1,500 megawatts of electricity.
The second hydroelectric dam projected for the Zambezi River was made
a national priority in 2018, but the structuring of the project, the
necessary studies and its financial viability assessment have barely
started yet.
Nevertheless, the government wants all this done and the first stone laid before the end of this five-year term.
“Completing the structuring and starting the construction of the
Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric power station in Tete Province, including
the Tete Line – Vilanculos and Tete – Maputo DC” is one of the actions
included in ‘Strategic Objective X’ of the government’s 2020 – 2024
Five-Year Plan, which is still to be considered and approved by the
Assembly of the Republic.
State companies Mozambican Electricity and Cahora Bassa Electric are
responsible for structuring the Mphanda Nkuwa hydroelectric power
station project, which has in the past been estimated as costing around
US$2.3 billion.
